Project Summary: The Hong Kong Disneyland project had been announced in November 1999 as being a venture between The Walt Disney Firm and the Hong Kong SAR Government plus scheduled to open in 2005/06. Current Project Status: Over the past 18 months, The Hong Kong SAR Authorities has completed the land reclamation and building the preliminary infrastructure work that will support the entire Hk Disneyland Resort, including the roads and support systems to accommodate the a large number of workers and activity taking place around the construction site. Walt Disney Imagineers have been working on the theme park for the past two years with preliminary designs happening at the Imagineers headquarters in Ca. The design work has been supported by local Hong Kong architectural firms and has recently been transferred to Hong Kong in planning for construction.

Benefits and Work Status: The project is estimated to create 18, 000 new job opportunities at opening — both from Disney and other employment opportunities, rising to 36, 000 once the first recreation area reaches build-out. The Government economist approximated that the first phase of the task will generate a present economic associated with HK$148 billion (US$19 billion) within benefits to Hong Kong.

The tendering process for the development of the task has been underway for several months along with three construction contracts already secured, and the remainder to be awarded within the next 18 months.
